How do ductless mini-splits work?

A ductless mini-split system has two parts: the outdoor compressor and indoor air handler. The condenser is connected to the compressor with a tube that also contains power and communication lines.
The compressor does what its name implies the refrigerant and delivers it to the condenser, where its heat is expelled into the ambient air. Now a liquid, this refrigerant passes through tubing to reach the evaporator which absorbs warmth from your home’s indoor air that circulates over its coils. Finally, cooled air gets released from your unit to provide comfort in your living space!

What are the advantages of ductless mini-splits?

If your home is heated by a boiler, you likely do not have ductwork, which is needed for central air conditioning. Thus, you may have thought that your only options for cooling your home were to shell out thousands of dollars to install ductwork or use window air conditioning units.

Both options offer distinct disadvantages.

Installing ductwork, as we said, is expensive, and that’s before buying and installing the central air conditioning system. It also means walls and ceilings all over your home need to be opened for ductwork installation, meaning you’ll be dealing with that mess for weeks.

Installation of ductless mini-splits, on the other hand, can be done in a day or two. Only a small hole is needed to connect the indoor and outdoor units for each mini-split.

Ductless mini-splits are superior to window A/C units in every way. For starters, they are much more energy efficient, meaning your space will be kept comfortable and cool while saving you money on energy costs.

Once you install mini-splits, you no longer need to deal with installing window units in the spring and removing them in the fall. You are also free from the security risk posed by window A/C units, especially on the ground floor. Window units also block light while letting dust, dirt, pollen, and bugs into your home. No more of that with ductless mini-splits!

You can install ductless split systems virtually anywhere in your home, ensuring they are optimally placed for maximum efficiency.

Your ductless mini-splits are tailored to your home and your needs. The size of the air handler can be customized to the space you’d like to cool down. Ductless mini-split units have the capacity to function autonomously, allowing for exact zoned cooling throughout your home. This zoned cooling can lead to big energy savings!

Even if you have central air conditioning, you may benefit from ductless mini-splits. For example, if you use your garage as a workshop or home gym, a ductless mini-split will make the space comfortable to use. Ditto for other spaces like a sunporch or shed.
